Benefits, definitions and waiting periods vary by policy and carrier. Not every feature is available in every state.

Live outside the U.S.? Here’s how it works.

You can start from your home country. To finish the process, you need to be in the United States.

  1. We start virtually. We talk about your family, your goals and your options, wherever you are.

  2. We plan around your next visit. You need to be in the United States for the medical exam and to sign the application. I’ll help you schedule both for your next trip.

  3. After that, we stay in touch virtually.

Options for people who live outside the U.S. depend on your country of residence and each carrier.

Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Ivanhoe Sánchez.

Independent insurance agent.

I grew up in Costa Rica and have called South Florida home since 2008. When I came into the industry, I kept seeing Spanish-speaking professionals get insurance advice that was rushed, confusing or only in English. I started Lapa to do it differently: one person, plain words, in your language.

Off the clock, I'm usually at home with my wife and our four kids, or playing soccer.

  • What you can count on
    • Plain words, in English or Spanish. I explain every option so it makes sense the first time.
    • No pressure to buy. You get the comparison and my honest take. The decision is yours.

  2. 02 · Compare

I compare the fine print, not just the price.

I lay several carriers side by side on what matters: how each one defines your occupation, what it pays if you can only work part-time, and how your benefit can grow.

Insurance myths, checked

Things smart people still believe about insurance.

Myth · Disability

“My employer’s disability plan is enough.”

Fact

If your employer paid for the plan, the benefits you receive are taxable income.

Source: IRS Publication 525

Myth · Life

“I’m young and healthy. Life insurance can wait.”

Fact

Your health affects whether you can get a policy and what you’ll pay. If your health changes later, a new policy can be harder to get or cost more.

Source: NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide

Myth · Long‑term care

“Medicare will pay for long‑term care.”

Fact

Medicare doesn’t pay for long‑term care like help with bathing, dressing or meals. It covers skilled nursing care for up to 100 days after a hospital stay, with a daily copay after day 20.

FAQ

Questions people ask first

How do you get paid?

The insurance company pays me a commission when a policy is issued. You don't pay me a fee for the call, the comparison or the help with your application.

Do I pay more by working with an advisor instead of going direct?

Generally, no. The insurance company sets the premium, so the same policy costs the same whether you buy it through an independent agent or directly from the carrier. The difference is that I compare several carriers for you.

I already have disability coverage through work. Do I need more?

Maybe. Group plans often cap the monthly benefit, may stop paying if you can do any job rather than your own, and usually end when you leave the employer. If your employer pays the premium, the benefits are taxable income. I can review your plan with you and see if there's a gap.

What is own-occupation disability insurance?

It's a definition of disability. With an own-occupation policy, you're considered disabled if you can't do the main duties of your specific occupation, even if you can still work in another role. Definitions vary by carrier and policy, so the exact wording is worth comparing.

What does it mean to be an independent insurance agent, and why does it matter?

I don’t work for one insurance company. I’m appointed with many carriers, so I can compare their policies side by side and recommend the one that fits you best, not the one I’m required to sell. If your needs change later, I can compare the market again instead of you starting over with someone else.

Which carriers do you work with?

As an independent agent, I can compare several carriers, including MassMutual, Prudential, Symetra, AuguStar Financial, OneAmerica, Ameritas, Principal, Pacific Life, Mutual of Omaha, Lincoln Financial, Lafayette Life, Corebridge Financial, Transamerica and National Life Group. The right fit depends on your profession, your health and the coverage you need.

I own a business. What can insurance do for the business itself?

Three things come up most. Key person coverage pays the business if you, or someone it depends on, dies or can't work. A buy-sell plan gives your partners the money to buy your share, so your family gets paid and the business keeps going. An executive bonus plan lets the business pay for a life policy for you or a key employee, and the policy belongs to that person. I can walk you through which ones fit, in English or Spanish.

Do you work with clients in Spanish?

Yes. The call, the comparison and the application can all be in Spanish, English or a mix of both. Some carrier documents are only in English, and I'll walk you through them in Spanish.

What happens on the 30-minute call?

I ask about your work, your income and who depends on you. I explain which types of coverage make sense for you and what they may cost. There are no forms and no obligation to buy. If you want to keep going, I prepare a side-by-side comparison.

Can you help me if I live outside Florida or outside the U.S.?

I'm licensed in Florida, so I can help Florida residents directly. If you live in another state or outside the U.S., reach out and I'll tell you whether I can help or point you to someone who can.
